Enhance Your Home with a Custom Cedar Fence

Are you looking to elevate your property's curb appeal, security, and privacy? A custom cedar fence is the perfect solution! Not only does cedar offer natural beauty and durability, but a custom-designed fence ensures that your home stands out while meeting your unique needs.

Why Choose a Cedar Fence?

  • Natural Durability – Resistant to rot, decay, and insect infestations.
  • Aesthetic Appeal – Warm tones and rich grain patterns for a timeless look.
  • Low Maintenance – Requires minimal staining or sealing.
  • Sustainable Choice – Environmentally friendly and sourced from renewable forests.

Cedar Sourcing

We locally source western red cedar logs and mill them down to produce a very high-quality product.

  • Tailored Dimensions - Milling our own lumber gives us complete control over the size and thickness of the boards. We are able to create custom dimensions suited to your specific project, which might not always be available at the local lumberyard.
  • Sustainability and Eco-Friendliness - We are committed to using local and salvaged logs, which helps reduce the environmental footprint compared to purchasing lumber that has been harvested and transported over long distances.

Cedar Grading

For cedar wood used in fencing, grading is important to ensure the durability and aesthetics of the fence. The grading system for cedar fencing generally takes into account the wood's appearance, structural integrity, and overall suitability for outdoor use. Here’s our cedar grading standard:

  • Clear Cedar -This is the highest grade and is free from knots and defects. It is also the most expensive. It has a uniform color, smooth grain, and is the most aesthetically pleasing option for a fence. It’s ideal for projects where appearance is a key factor, and it’s also durable due to its resistance to rot.
  • #1 cedar - no more than 3 knots exceeding 2 inches in diameter, no wane, no black rings, no cracks. This grade is often used for the more visible parts of a fence, such as the pickets, where the appearance is important. It is also used in applications where the strength of the wood matters but without the high price of clear cedar (which is a more premium grade).
  • #2 & Better - All tight knot with allowing a black ring on one side minimal wane allowed, knots cannot exceed 2.5 inches, no cracks. #2 cedar is less expensive than #1 cedar, making it a good choice for large projects where you need good-quality wood without the higher price tag of #1.
  • #2 Standard - Black ring knots, no knot size restrictions, possible cracks, worm holes, machine damage, or wane; however, there will be no holes, and the board will be structurally sound.

Fence Boards

  • Standard fence boards are 5/8 inch thick.
  • Standard widths offered: full 6-inch wide or full 4-inch wide.
  • 6-ft fence boards are the only ones graded into different grades. All other sizes are #2 & better, but we can accommodate clear upon request (note that there may be a lead time).
  • Other stocked lengths in 4-inch and 6-inch widths: 3 ft, 4 ft, 5 ft, and 8 ft.
  • Custom dimensions can be cut; these are just stocked items.
  • Fence boards are always green, not kiln-dried, which means they will shrink slightly over time.
  • Fence boards are always rough-cut, not smooth like finished wood inside your house.

Post Types

  • Post on Pipe - A cedar post on pipe is a high-end fence post that dramatically extends the fence’s lifespan by eliminating post rot since the post does not physically touch the ground. We bore a 1 5/8-inch hole, 11 inches deep into the post, and glue a galvanized pipe inside. This method is also ideal for retaining walls and concrete surfaces where a fence needs to be securely attached. We can weld steel to the bottom and bolt it to concrete for added stability.
  • Disadvantage of Post on Pipe - Although cedar is naturally resistant to rot and decay, it is not as structurally strong as pressure-treated wood. In high winds, cedar posts may crack or split under stress, especially if they are taller or have large surface areas exposed to wind. This issue is typically only a concern when the fence exceeds 6 feet in height.
  • Pressure Treated posts -Pressure-treated posts are the most common and economical option. Standard pressure-treated posts measure 3 ½ by 3 ½ inches, but we prefer using what we call a "jumbo" post, which is 4 1/8 by 4 1/8 inches. While slightly more expensive, jumbo posts are less prone to warping over time and provide greater durability, ultimately extending the lifespan of the fence.

Customization Options to Suit Your Style

  • Various Fence Styles – Picket, privacy, horizontal, and lattice designs.
  • Stain & Finish Options – Natural finishes, clear sealants, or rich stains.
  • Decorative Accents – Custom gates, post caps, and trellises.

Fence Staining

Staining your cedar fence is not absolutely necessary, but it offers many advantages, including enhanced durability, aesthetic appeal, and protection against weathering, UV damage, and moisture. If you want to preserve the fence’s natural color, extend its lifespan, and minimize maintenance over time, applying a stain is a smart investment. However, if you prefer the look of weathered wood and don’t mind natural aging, you can leave the fence untreated. Ultimately, the decision to stain or not depends on your preferences and the level of maintenance you’re willing to commit to, as restaining should be done every 2 to 3 years.

Gate Security

In Seattle, many people are concerned with securing their property, so they want a fence gate with a lock. However, using a padlock means it can only be locked from one side, making it less user-friendly. Additionally, wood expands and contracts over time, making it unsuitable for installing a proper door lock. We have a solution for you! We can fabricate a custom steel gate with the option to have the wood picture-framed. Steel posts with welded-on hinges and a secure door lock provide both functionality and style, ensuring lasting security for your property.
